China Hits Back At ‘Violent’ Olympic Protesters

April 13, 2008

The Chinese ambassador to London has denounced the “violent” British protesters who attacked the Olympic torch relay.

Fu Ying also accused the Western media of “demonisation” of the country which will host the Games in August.

She said Chinese athletes who came to London for the torch relay “were convinced that people here were against them”.

Writing in the Sunday Telegraph, she said of China’s people: “Many who had romantic views of the West are very disappointed at the media’s attempt to demonise China. We all know demonisation feeds a counter-reaction.”

She said many of those who protested had probably not been to Tibet which she described as a land “loved” by the Chinese people.

“There may be complicated problems of religion mixing with politics, but people are well-fed, well-clothed and and well-housed. That has been the main objective of China for centuries.”

The ambassador added: “Many complain about China not allowing enough access to the media. In China, the view is that the Western media need to earn respect.”

Demonstrators in London disrupted the torch relay as soon as it arrived at Wembley on a double-decker bus last Sunday.

And protests have continued to dog the relay as the torch travelled later through Paris and San Francisco.

The protesters are angry about China’s occupation of Tibet where dozens of people have been killed in riots.

Earlier in the week, president of the International Olympic Committee Jacques Rogge said the demonstrations had left the Games in crisis and urged Beijing to honour its pledges to improve human rights.

Comment:

However most sources around the world have noted that most of the protests were completely peaceful and were a reaction to China’s appalling human rights crimes against it’s own people and the ongoing terrible treatment of the Tibetan people.

The British police have been widely criticized too for their poor handling and heavy handed tactice against mainly liberal, peaceful peopll out to make their voice heard.

There is also the matter of the ‘blue suited foot soldiers’ guarding the torch. Who were they? Why were they here? Why were they aggressive? Why did they have special powers?
Another example of ill thought out practices, buy the U.K Government, Police, and Ken Livingstone and his Mayoral office, who was ultimately responsible, along with the corrupt Olympic Committee.

We can only hope the like of this is never seen again. More intelligent thought needs to be given to the allocation of the Olympics, and money, greed and political gain should not be factors guiding the decisions of the Olympic Committee.

A mass boycott of the Chinese Olympics, peacefully, seems to be the best option.
